Three years ago, several players in the cosmetic
s sector formed an unprecedented
“DNA & cosmetics” c onsortium to promote cutting edge technologies based on DNA
analysis , in order to guarantee the traceability of plant raw materials with a strong desire to increase transparency and security of supply.
These technologies are based on genetic tools developed by the DNA Gensee laboratory , to “read” DNA barcodes on plants and algae to ensure their authentication with high reliability.
A first step had been taken in early 2023 with the signing of a pre consortium agreement by the historical players Clarins , Croda Beauty Actives, DNA Gensee Greentech L’Oréal and Nuxe to promote these technologies through scientific projects.
Today the members actively collaborate in:
➢ The development of a bank of genetic « signatures ». The construction of the prototype of this database is based on collaboration with botanical gardens and/ or specialized conservatories, for the search of botanically authenticated plant samples and the determination of their genetic signature.
This in depth work includes the study of closely related species and the creation of appropriate tools for the absolute authentication of plant resources. The creation of the prototype of this database is now launched. The project to enrich it will continue over the coming years with the addition of new botanical references.
➢ Internationalization of the consortium through the arrival of major players in the cosmetics sector involved in the manufacture of cosmetic ingredients or finished products. Joining the DNA & Cosmetics consortium reflects the same desire to guarantee the authenticity of their raw materials and their desire for transparency.
