EURO COSMETICS :

What are the biggest challenges you face?

Dr. Shaheen Majeed:

While it’s been an incredibly rewarding year, like any company, we’ve faced a few challenges that require continuous attention and adaptability.

  • The global nature of our business requires us to stay ahead of evolving regulations, especially regarding natural ingredients. Compliance ensures product safety and efficacy, but changing regulations, particularly in emerging markets, can challenge product development and market entry. Therefore, we’ve invested in strong regulatory relationships and up-to-date systems for the smooth transition.
  • Supply chain disruptions have prompted us to create strong and diversified supply chains, though raw material volatility and shipping delays still impact production. We mitigate these risks by working closely with suppliers and exploring alternative sourcing.
  • Sustainability is crucial but challenging to balance with profitability. Meeting demands for eco-friendly practices requires careful planning and investment. We’ve integrated sustainability into our operations, ensuring it doesn’t compromise quality or profitability.
  • The dynamic health and wellness market demands we stay ahead of trends while investing in innovation and R&D. Predicting market shifts and developing relevant products is critical.
  • Innovation is at the heart of Sami-Sabinsa but balancing cutting-edge R&D with cost control is essential. New product development in nutraceuticals is capital-intensive, so we must manage costs to remain competitive and reinvest in future projects.

EURO COSMETICS:

And how will you set the course for the future?

Shaheen Majeed:

Setting the course for the future of Sami-Sabinsa is an exciting and strategic responsibility. My vision is centred around continuing to build on the strong foundation we’ve already established, while also navigating the evolving landscape of the health and wellness industry.

  • To strengthen the global market presence, expanding the services in emerging markets like USA, Europe, Japan, Middle East, China, UAE and many more. Ensure global availability of high-quality, scientifically validated products.
  • To promote innovation and collaboration, investing in people, creating a collaborative and inclusive culture, and support teams with training and tools. Explore collaborations with industry leaders through joint ventures, acquisitions, and technology partnerships to expand reach, enhance product offerings, and access new markets.

EURO COSMETICS:

Probiotics are increasingly becoming important ingredients in cosmetic formulations.  As a leading contract manufacturer of pre-, pro- and postbiotics, Sabinsa presented its postbiotic Lactosporin ™ and its application in cosmetic formulations at in-cosmetics in Amsterdam. What is special about Lactosporin ™ and its mode of action?

Shaheen Majeed:

LactoSporin® is truly an innovative ingredient. What makes Lactosporin particularly special is its unique postbiotic nature for skin and hair care. It is purified from the culture supernatant of the probiotic strain Heyndrickxia coagulans (Bacillus coagulans) MTCC 5856 (LactoSpore®) by a patented process. LactoSporin® is stable at an acidic pH and temperature range of 70 to 90°C.

Mode of action:

It effectively targets acne-causing bacteria like Cutibacterium acnes. Clinically, it reduces non-inflammatory lesions and inflammation, with visible results in just three days. LactoSporin® inhibited the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, reducing sebum secretion and managing oily skin. Additionally, it exhibits strong antioxidant activity, promotes collagen synthesis, inhibits collagenase, and combats glycation, preventing wrinkles and dullness. It reduces inflammation by inhibiting TNF-α and provides UVA and UVB protection. Clinically effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and to keep the skin hydrated. LactoSporin® may additionally induce hair growth by stimulating the dermal papillary cells.

EURO COSMETICS:

Another innovation presented by Sabinsa is Nulaurin ®, a natural active ingredient to support acne-prone skin and scalp. What have scientific studies shown about its effectiveness?

Shaheen Majeed:

Nulaurin ® is a glycerol ester of lauric acid from Cocos nucifera.

  • In-vitro tests showed inhibition of acne-causing Cutibacterium acnes and common skin pathogens Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Scientific studies have shown that Nulaurin® effectively inhibited the growth of Malassezia furfur, linked to dandruff. Assisted in removing scalp flakes.
  • From clinical tests, Nulaurin® along with other actives is proven to be safe and effective for skin with light moderate acne, it was also found to reduce the appearance of blemishes.

EURO COSMETICS :
