Shin-Etsu silicones’ water-based SPD-WT1 dispersion of TiO2 drives sensorial & SPF benefits at IN-COSMETICS GLOBAL 2O24

The demanding cosmetic industries’ beauty trend for “All Natural” ingredients continues to grow. Leading this natural trend is water−the most sustainable solvent you can use in cosmetics. Meeting this head-on, Shin-Etsu Silicones Europe B.V. (SESE: Head Office The Netherlands: A subsidiary of Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd., Japan) recently introduced its new SPD-WT1−a high concentration dispersion of hydrophobic treated ultrafine Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) in water−at the In-Cosmetics Global 2024 Exhibition in Paris, France.
Premiering at the SESE booth’s interactive texture bar, amongst a wide range of innovative formulations, the SPD-WT1 was able to catch significant attention from visitors. It has remarkable sensorial benefits and SPF properties in addition to its environmentally friendly profile by using water instead of organic or synthetic solvents−notably for sun care applications. Ultimately, by using SESE technology, SPD-WT1 provides high transparency and fluidity to formulations. As a low viscosity dispersion, it is also easy to mix into water.
SPD-WT1 / INCI: Titanium Dioxide (and) Butylene Glycol (and) Hydrated Silica (and) Polyglyceryl-3 Disiloxane Dimethicone (and) Hydrogen Dimethicone

SPD-WT1 / KEY FEATURES:

  • Aqueous dispersion of hydrophobic treated ultrafine TiO2 that can be added to the water phase.
  • High concentration TiO2 dispersion makes it easy to create high SPF products.
  • Achieves both water resistance and washability with soap.
  • Low viscosity and easy-to-use.
  • ISO 16128 / Natural Origin Index (NOI): 76.5%

A pioneer in the field of silicones for personal care products, SESE’s new water-based dispersion system represents their innovative commitment to markets demanding natural ingredients. Titanium Dioxide is specifically treated and processed to yield a stable in water. Therefore, it is ideally used in suncare products, and other skin care or color cosmetics that desire to claim sun protection.

SPD-WT1 / CONCLUSION:
According to SESE’s Head of Sales/Cosmetics, Dr. Martin Kropfgans, “If you have a water-based formulation, you might assume it is not water resistant−but we have data showing that it is. The data was the result of a test, where we applied each dispersion to synthetic leather and water resistance as well as washability were evaluated. As a conclusion, while being water resistant, it’s quite easily removeable if you use soap−whereas other water-based formulations were not water resistant.”

SESE’s Sales Promotion & Marketing Manager, Estelle Lenoir noted, “There are not many water-based dispersions of Titanium Dioxide in the marketplace yet. SPD-WT1 powder content at 50%−representing a formidable stepping-stone base for other UV filter products to evolve from.”
SESE’s interactive texture bar succeeded in attracting significant interest from the visitors of the highly attended In-Cosmetics Global 2024 Exhibition−with SPD-WT1 as a focal point of interest. A vital addition to SESE’s growing portfolio of cosmetics silicones with natural ingredients, sampling of the natural dispersion are available upon request.
